Sustainable Agriculture Association of the Bear River Area

SAABRA was formed in October of 2001 as a non-profit corporation to organize citizens and professionals throughout the Bear River Region into a structure that will support and enhance sustainable agriculture in our area and throughout Utah and Southern Idaho. The goals of SAABRA are to: educate our consumers and legislators to the benefits and techniques of sustainable agriculture, assist farmers and food-based entrepreneurs develop value-added products;  provide educational literature, research, and technical assistance to farmers and citizens; organize methods of linking consumers with locally produced food products; and obtain and administer the resources needed to accomplish these goals.

The objectives of SAABRA are to:

  • promote sustainable agriculture by educating farmers, consumers,policy makers, and the general public
  • coordinate the education and training of owners/managers of value-added agriculture and food-based businesses
  • provide mentoring opportunities for food-based business owners
  • provide outreach and linkage among businesses, producers, and consumers
  • coordinate needed infrastructure and resources to enable the above listed objectives

Current Activities of SAABRA

Gardeners Market seasonal open air gathering of farmers, gardeners, and craftspeople. Last year we averaged 40 vendors and between 500 - 1000 shoppers each Saturday from May through October.

Bear River Kitchen Incubator An inspected commercial kitchen for people who want to sell processed foods. The use of this type of facility is required by food safety regulations and sharing this resource means that no one business will have to pay the expensive capital investments alone.

Cache Community Garden We will be assisting with administration of the Cache Community Garden a gardening area shared by urban families with the assistance of Extension professionals

Newsletter We are developing a newsletter, and a guide document called from field to fork - handbook for food-based entrepreneurs in Utah

Mobile Poultry Processing Unit The mission of the SAABRA Mobile Poultry Processing Unit (MPPU) is to allow small-scale poultry producers to process their birds in a safe manner in a Utah inspected facility so that they can sell birds to the public within Utah.
